Book Making

Sixth Graders will use book binding processes to create their own book like that of the medieval book binders.  They will use materials safely.

An Old Lady Swallowing Flies?

Students will recreate the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly in an art piece.  They will use a paper bag to create the old woman.  They will cut paper in half, creating a new whole each time, in order to create all the crazy things the old woman swallowed.  They can then reenact the story using their art piece.

Here is an example:

Penguins, Penguins Everywhere

Students will create 10 playful penguins in a snowy background with simple shapes and line.  They will experiment with oil pastels to add color.

Here is a story for inspiration.  

Now draw your 10 penguins and add color.

The Bear Snores On

Students will create an art piece based on the book, The Bear Snores On.  They will follow a guided drawing of the bear and then add additional animals to their bear cave.

Turkeys in Disguise

Kindergarten will create a turkey in disguise after listening to the story, Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano.

Guest Teacher

I am so happy that Miss Grant will be joining us for the next 6 weeks as she completes her student teaching.  She has graciously created and provided to us some instructional videos for our upcoming projects.  The second graders are beginning the first stages of creating their Animal Habitats Mural.

Students will draw animals through observation.  Envisioning the shapes that make up the body of an animal, students will create several animals.  Here is Miss Grant's first instructional video and the photograph she is using as reference.

In the next video Miss Grant gives us a demonstration using the oil pastels to add color to our animals.

Animal Habitats

Students will first learn how to draw animals through observation, envisioning the simple shapes that make up the body of the animal.  Here are some examples of the steps taken to create this bear and bird.

 

When students have finished creating and painting their animals, they will classify them all by the habitat in which they live.  After we have decided on the habitats needed to house our animals, each group of students will, after sketching out their ideas, create a different habitat, in paint, on butcher paper.  Our animals will be added and all our habitats will be pieced together to create one huge mural!

Our Community

Students will collaboratively create a collage mural of their community.  They will begin by creating their homes like this one...

Next they will create other places in their community and finally we will put it all together in one big mural.
